The hybrid pollutes more than the SUV.
If it makes you feel like you accomplished something then I guess the answer is yes. If you really want to do something for the world find a new clean energy source. THAT will give everyone better mental balance.
Everytime that we do something that we believe is positive and beneficial to the world or to society, we will receive the psychological benefits and balance of feeling like we have been useful and contributing members of society, which we need to have a sense of in life, especially in our latter years when we struggle, as Erikson wrote, with integrity versus despair. I think it is important, however, not to be “balanced on an illusion,” so to speak. As evidenced even in many of the responses that question what is in fact beneficial to the environment, there is a concern that we may be patting ourselves on the back while we pour fuel on the fire. It seems, therefore, that the best path is to do what you can and what you know how to do to be a good steward of the planetary resources we have been given, while keeping your eyes and ears and mind open for new information that can help you to do it better. Being open to ways of changing for the better can be a hard thing to do, but when we are psychologically able to do that, we may be truly even more healthy than someone who just assuages their conscience with a token act of preservation.
I believe that any time you are back in touch with the natural world, you are doing something very important for your mental health. I don’t believe that most people are really built for living in a world of concrete and steel; if we were, I doubt that so very many of would take so much trouble to get out of the cities on the weekends, and go to the lake, skiing, hiking, and so on. This certainly seems to be a need that many of us share, and if we do not work to preserve our own personal favorite patch of the natural world, it won’t be long before it doesn’t exist any longer. Conversely, I believe when we DO actively work to preserve that special spot, or someone ELSE’S special treasure, that we know somewhere inside that we have done something fundamentally RIGHT, and I believe it contributes to our self-worth and self-esteem.
I think that what we can do to live a green lifestyle also enhances our well being. Not only knowing that an individual is working to preserve our ecosystem, but to be in touch with our environment to an extent as to want the environment to be healthy can definitely lead to a more balanced outlook on life and keep one grounded in the present.
Hey, Mercury, it’s not the personal outlook that matters. MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE ENVIRONMENT is what counts! So if your not actually going to truly take huge action to change the environment, you don’t deserve some extra “peace of mind”.
when you get out and smell the outdoors, flowers, trees, bushes and water it will make you feel wonderful. all people should injoy nature and its free.
A large group of us in another category are questioning the validity of this question . Green Lifestyle ? = Mental Balance ? WHAT?
Anyways , I will follow the rules and answer the posted question .
Emphatically NO . Mental balance and the ‘notion’ of being ‘green’ have absolutely no connection whatsoever and I’m appalled that you seem to be implying that it does . Therefore I believe you are intentionally misleading people by trying to connect something religious or spiritual to being ‘green’ .
i think so. i live in the woods all my life and i think i would die if i lived in the city. i feel more open
yes,I think it makes us feel a lot better , knowing that we are doing all we can to make it a better place to live not only for us but every one else on this planet and all the ones to come.
Absolument, absolutely, absolumentus, absolumentae, oui, yes, butofcourse, mais oui, yeahhh, oui, si, por su puesto, oui oui ouioui………
In the immortal words of Forrest Gump, “….Just one less thing.” (to worry about). Knowing you’ve done your part no matter how small and seemingly insignificant, if everyone does something it will eventually add up.
I agree with Jade. Living green, or appreciating the earth and taking care of it gives us a spiritual connection to our creator, the earth was created for man….what a beautiful gift it is even though many don’t cherish it the same way.
Living green for me includes recycling my paper products and my cans, I’ve also changed most of my light bulbs to those spirally ones, that was back in February, and I have definitely seen a difference in my electric bill this summer.
Compared to last month’s bill, the difference is only .68 cents more this month…that says something for living green! **smiles**
I always feel better when I feel like I’m giving back instead of being a taker, a consumer. Since I began respecting the environment more I’ve felt better about the type of person I am. I feel a certain kind of pride when I look at a tree I planted.
When someone can create a nuclear powerd vehicle or an economically feasible hydrogen powered vehicle, then we can talk.
You do realize however that by making a greener Earth…that the Earth will continue to warm and thus provide more fuel to the “Global Warming” fanatics.
Absolutely.
Yes. We are an educated society for one thing. We know that we are doing wrong by polluting. So of course we are going to feel bad. Our subconscious is even being effected more than we know. Our subconscious is our warning center and even gives us hindsight when we should’ve done something. Hybrid cars take up more of other resources. Some of the cells go bad too fast and the disposal is going to be a HUGE problem. Electric cars are good with self generators and solar panels. Some even have propellers for the wind to generate power! As far as recycling take a look at this video about bottled water. http://cosmos.bcst.yahoo.com/up/player/p…
Very simple things that almost everyone can do is put a brick in the toilet tank, turn off lights, buy reusable grocery bags, pickup extra trash besides yours, don’t floor the gas pedal. Don’t run excessive water.
no did it help Albert Gore Jr. he was driving a hybrid with his dad’s Stash but I hope the prison is environmentally friendly
Lame. Absolutely not. Maybe in their own mind, but I’m not a big fan of tree-hugging hippies. I find most people that live a ‘green’ lifestyle to have an inaccurate view and arrogant attitude about how great a difference they’re making. They also tend to try to make me feel bad if I throw away an Aluminum can. Give me a break!!!
Well: yes it can by doing the ” Conservation For Green Earth
Project any way you know about Aluminum cans Recycling
Association would help each 1 community if they would
donate & also use safer Transportation called Rideshare”
Fighting to keep the environment alive and healthy is a good thing, no doubt. These things like hybrid cars and recycling are great, but do not aid in helping your “mental balance.” As far as nature is concerned, the only thing that could help is actually taking time from trying to keep the environment together and simply just enjoy the beauty within our own world. In this fast paced world so much is overlooked. Not as many people adore God’s handiwork. A simple sunset is so complex. Trees that are taller than many of are houses, yet they can stand there for years and years while houses fall over by bad wind storms. So much of these things, while good; are just used for political and economical gain. Look at the hybrids, now all the car dealers are competing to have a better vehicle that is a hybrid (nothing wrong with that, but it changes things from environmentalism to commercialism). Those are just my thoughts. In the end, while these are all good things; they aren’t going to aid in your mental balance.
As long as your company is swiftly and surely schlooping down the toilet, along with the American middle class in general, it’s nice to know you’re out there cranking out these swell marketing gimmicks.
I drive a Geo Metro because it saves me money.
It’s an old Geo Metro because none of you ad campaigning clowns can be bothered to build cheap, fuel efficient cars.
i think people that drive hybrid cars are saving money in the long run and helping the environment. and more and more people are making it a habit to do so as well, if we keep going at this rate something will change for the better, my next car is probably going to be a hybrid vehicle, but i think what should happen is to get a 100% methanol or ethanol car, something that we do not have to use oil for anymore, and ethanol can be reproduced, we already have the technology but it is not being implemented because of “the big oil companies” i believe, i think we should all care about the environment as much as we can and help each other, and the greener the lifestyle i think the better its going to be…i hope this helps the question…
I have personally watch the redwoods be destroyed by capitalism. Had to leave the area to have a better peace of mind. They complain about all the cement in southern California and then they move into the North, cut down the trees, put cement in, have no clue on how the land or environment is being destroyed because they have money and could care less. Bought 10 1/4 acres in another northern state. We cleared by hand, left great areas for the quail, doves, chippers, squirrels, badger, and between 2:00 and 4:00 in the morning we have a HUGH cougar and she is beautiful. We recycle everything. Oh yes ,we have a silver fox. I organic garden your own fruits and veges. We respect the land. They took out some trees before we bought and we planted 276 new log pole tree and are going to make a THICK forest with cedar. We have mostly forest but, it needs to be what it use to be.
In regards to transportation, hybrid vehicles appear a bit elitist to me. Real environmental impact can occur from walking, riding a bicycle, or using mass transit. Rather than getting a status symbol, making a real sacrifice, in a manner that can help with your personal health, makes more sense to me. I think that incentives (perhaps tax credits and health care reductions) should be offered to people who are able to participate in productive activity like work and school without using personal internal combustion vehicles, including hybrids (40 mpg? Not as good as a geo metro). Being healthy by perhaps structuring in walking or cycling for daily transportation can lead to better mental balance. Mind and body, just like the Greeks said.
I think that choosing to live in a metropolitan area is an un-green choice. Transportation in metropolitan areas is likely one of the largest causes of pollution, that problem is worsened due to congestion. In a metropolitan area, likely thousands of trees were cut down and thousands of yards of concrete has been poured for so called progress. That is un-green. If less people lived in metropolitan areas or if less people in metropolitan areas used personal internal combustion engines, pollution would be substantially less. Not living in a metropolitan area can also be good for mental balance, living in the a more rural setting can be more peaceful.
mental balance…i would say no….better life yes…we are all responsible for taking care of the place we live…what we do today impacts tomorrow….our family recycles…driving a hybrid not yet…but every little bit helps…we have a lot to fix..look at what we have lost already…do to being wastefull…it is never too late to start living a little bit greener…but the greener products need to come down on price so that it is available to EVERYONE ..not just the people who have money
I think our mental balance has nothing to do with a green lifestyle. One person could love the city New york for example and feel that a walk through Central Park is enough for he or she. To have a better mental balance a green lifestyle isn’t everything. Yes you might be healthier but I feel that many other factors can come into play when you speak about someones mental balance. Like what kind of values they have? etc.
I think anything you do that isn’t only for yourself can make you feel better because you aren’t being selfish
Yes I am sure in some ways living a green lifestyle can give you a better balance in life. Most of all I reccommend that you take care of yourself and treat others well. Drink more tea because it helps relax you and reduces stress and fiteuge. As far as mental you need spiritual. I found this from learning from others and my faith.
it doesn’t affect me at all.
my relationship with God, and my acceptance of Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior has impacted me in ways you could never imagine.
it is very doubtful that leaving less of a carbon footprint would make me have a better mental outlook…but if that thing floats your boat as they say then it would work for you
I think the hybrids sound/seem like a good idea. My problem lies with not knowing who are the people that will get the kick-back t his time. I think this subject could be at the heart of a huge & hotly debated political ploy. Interesting how the gas prices skyrocketed just after Bush endorsed specific hybrids.
