Unexpected Baby Hamsters..?

My nephew (8 going on 9) managed to convince my mom to get him a mall-pet-store female Syrian hamster (and yes, about two weeks ago, apparently), and just discovered she had pups. I believe they are at the very most 24 hrs old. This new family lives in a ‘CritterTrail X’ cage, and she decided to nest in the “Petting Zone”, the second highest floor of the cage. (Here’s the mfg’s site, http://www.superpetusa.com/index.html ; see the ‘tupperware’ shaped part with the green top, against the purple roof? Right there.) I’m concerned about the pups being up there and falling down the tunnel tube when they start moving about, especially after two weeks old. Also should we remove the wheel..?
My biggest(!) concern is that her cage is in the living room… barely two meters from the tv. Should we move the cage (although this would be a major disruption to her), move it to the floor from the desk it’s on, block it off visually with boxes…?
My retired father also likes to watch news channels and although a fairly intelligent person, is somewhat… insensitive, usually talks loudly on the phone and won’t always remember that the mother needs quiet during such a sensitive time. I’m not sure what to do with her cage location because of all this. Any timely advice would be very helpful.
What I already know:
1. Babies no touchy (for at least two weeks).
2. Cooked eggs, tofu, carrots and apples for mom’s extra nutrition in addition to regular fresh food & water. (Scrambled/fried eggs too greasy..? Can the tofu be uncooked?)
3. No cage cleaning for at least two weeks.
4. Added white tp for soft nesting material.
5. Other than feed and water, no disturbances.
6. Weaned at about 3 weeks, separate to male/female from mom before 4 weeks, or to be on the safe side, individually to prevent breeding.

So far so good. You’re on the right track. Instead of scrambled/fried eggs..give her boiled eggs. He needs protein, not fat. =P
I do suggest you move the cage to a quieter area. Since the hamster is new to the family, she’s probably not even used to the new people/surroundings yet and most hamsters get rather aggressive/protective and stressed out easily after giving birth.
Also…that cage is WAY too small for a Syrian hamster. And as you noticed yourself…it’s not baby proof.
You can go to any store that sells tupperwear and get one of those big clear/see through plastic bins and use it as a cage. It’s more floor room and no way a baby can escape/injure itself. They’re also CHEAP…and you’ll have to separate babies by sex by 4 weeks old, so you’ll need another cage anyway. You can use chicken wire mesh as a top for the bin (can get at home depo) OR drill A LOT of holes in the top and top part of sides of the bin all around.
And start looking for suitable homes for the babies NOW….it’s harder than you’d think and those 5-6 weeks will pass by fast. Remember, syrians are solitary animals and will have to be housed individually by 2 months old.
As for moving the babies/mom to a possible new cage or cleaing the one she’s in…..Wait till babies are 1-2 weeks old…Put on gloves and DONT TOUCH the babies. SCOOP up the babies with the nest they’re in and place in new cage. Throw in some of the dirty bedding into the new cage so the mom will have some familiar smell.

Good job! youre doing great! just dont touch the babies until theyre at least 4 weeks old. then you have to seperate the babies!
Find good homes for all the babies right now so their homes can be ready when they are 4 weeks old.
You dont need to do much just make sure they can reach the water bottle.
The mom should take care of the rest.
If the mom thinks the pups are in danger she will eat them. Dont mess with the cage or them unless you have to.

Don’t worry about where she put the nest. She knows where the best place is. You have it all right. BUT you may want to count the pups and start getting homes. The pet stores will not accept them.
Also to add to the list,
#7 at 4 weeks the genders should be seperated in 2 differr cages (can put females with mom till they go to the new homes)
    heres a gender diagramhttp://www.freewebs.com/hamsterhighway/s…
good luck :) you will need it
